Rifle Falls State Park, is a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Colorado's stunning landscape. Prepare to embark on an unforgettable adventure filled with camping beneath starlit skies, marveling at majestic waterfalls, and delving into mysterious caves. Join us as we unveil the wonders that await in this captivating natural haven.
Where is it located?
Rifle Falls State Park is located 3 hours West of Denver on highway 70. The biggest town that is close to Rifle Falls is Glenwood Springs. It is only a 40 minute drive back to this magical State Park.

For us it was a 4.5 hour drive through the back roads of Wyoming and Colorado from Laramie, which we loved. When we travel back roads we tend to find the next place we want to explore and more hidden gems.
Where to Stay
At Rifle Falls State Park, camping enthusiasts are in for a treat. Picture yourself surrounded by towering trees, embraced by the soothing sounds of nature. The park offers well-maintained campsites equipped with fire rings, where you can gather around with loved ones, sharing stories and savoring the warmth of a crackling campfire. Whether you prefer pitching a tent or bringing your RV, the tranquil ambiance and starlit skies will surely create memories to last a lifetime. There are 13 drive-in campsites equipped with 30 amp electrical outlets and 7 walk-in only tent sites. There are pit toilet bathrooms located at either end of the campground. Another great convenience is that you can buy firewood at the entrance when you buy your pass or with the camp host. The campsites are on either side of the dirt road, and if you can, you want to reserve the campsites next to the river. The sound of the rushing water is so soothing and if you have any anglers in the family, trout can be caught right beside your campsite.
Nearby is Glenwood Springs, CO. It is only 40 minutes from Rifle State Park if you are not a camper. There are plenty of accommodations to be found in Glenwood Springs and it is a great town to explore if you have time after visiting the falls.
What to do at the park?
The Falls

The biggest attraction at the park are the three 80 foot waterfalls. Prepare to be awe-struck by the natural beauty of Rifle Falls. As you exit your car and make your way down the very short and accessible pathway, the sound of rushing water grows louder, until you see the beautiful side by side falls. Three breathtaking waterfalls plunge down magnificent cliffs, their cool mist refreshing your senses. Recently there have been guard rails installed around the pathways for protection of hikers and the delicate landscape. As you wander along the well-maintained pathways, the falls reveal different perspectives, each more mesmerizing than the last. If you are staying nearby, be sure to visit the falls at different times of the day to see the difference in how light can change the look of the falls. The morning brings direct light upon the falls and gives the mist an ethereal feeling. The afternoon the sun sets behind the falls and brings bright colorful sunset skies as a backdrop to the falls. Don't forget your camera, as you'll want to capture these moments forever.
The Caves

Venture beyond the waterfalls to discover the hidden secrets of Rifle Falls State Park. The park boasts a network of fascinating caves waiting to be explored. Step into a world of wonder as you navigate through ancient passages and marvel at the intricate rock formations. Children will love to roam through these granite wonders. The caves remain unmarked and are open to personal exploration. Remember to bring a flashlight, as you venture deeper into the captivating darkness. There are a few animals that make these dark nooks their homes so be conscious of where you step. When we were there we saw bats flying at night and evidence of small rodents living in some of the caves.
Hiking Trails

Rifle Falls State Park offers a variety of trails suitable for all skill levels. Lace up your hiking boots and embark on a journey through enchanting landscapes. The trails wind through dense forests, revealing panoramic vistas of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The trails in the park vary from 1- 1.5 miles and are all rated easy. I would recommend the Coyote Trail. It takes you above the falls for a great overlook of the valley and there is a walkway right on top of the three falls that is grated to allow for an opportunity to see the water beneath your feet.
