Nestled in the heart of the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, Ouray is often called the "Switzerland of America." With its stunning natural beauty, charming streets, and rich history, spending a day in Ouray promises a memorable adventure. Join us as we explore the highlights of this picturesque mountain town and make the most of your visit.

First stop by the visitor's center for all the information and maps you will need for the day. The people who work in the center are very friendly and knowledgeable. I used to do all my information gathering before going to a new place but I have now found out that stopping at visitor centers can give you valuable information that you might not get online. These are the people who live in the area full time so they definitely know more than others who also are just visiting.
Perimeter Trail
There is a 5.6-mile perimeter trail around the town of Ouray where you can see many of the highlights. The trail starts right beside the visitor’s center so you can park for free and take off from there. The perimeter trail is considered a moderate trail and you can stop and explore Cascade Falls, Baby Bathtubs, and Box Canyon Falls from the trail.
Lower Cascade Falls
There are several incredible waterfalls in the town of Ouray. The easiest to get to is Lower Cascade Falls. You will find parking for the falls right off of 8th Avenue. The hike is right at .2 miles round trip. The 200ft waterfall is set against massive canyon walls. It is one of 7 falls in the Cascade Creek system.

Box Canyon Falls
Box Canyon Falls Park is located right off Main St. on your way up to the Million Dollar Highway. A short hike will take you to the breathtaking Box Canyon Falls, a 285-foot waterfall cascading into a narrow, dramatic gorge. The sight and sound of the rushing water make for an awe-inspiring start to your day. You can also take a short but steep hike to the overlook above the falls for incredible views of the town of Ouray and the surrounding Mountains.
Million Dollar Highway
Drive the Million Dollar Highway from Ouray. The Million Dollar Highway is a 25-mile highway through the San Juan Mountains to Silverton CO. Although the origin of the name is still unknown, many people guess that the nickname was coined by the beautiful views around every corner or the amount of money it cost to build this incredible road. Right outside of town stop by the “Switzerland of America” sign for the best views of the town and grab an iconic photo beside the sign. Just a way down from this overlook is Bear Creek Falls. It is one of the prettiest overlooks on the whole highway and features towering mountains and waterfalls on both sides of the canyon. From Ouray, it is 13 miles to the Red Mountain Pass at 11,018ft, the highest point on the Million Dollar Highway.
